Our Top 5 Tips for Egg Quality

Whether you’re deep into your fertility journey, or you’re just starting preconception efforts, egg quality is relevant for the health of your future pregnancy and future child. Genetics determines some of it, but environment plays a big role – and that’s the part you can influence in your daily life.

Here are our top tips for improving egg quality…

1. Avoid fertility toxins

A key effort to influencing the quality of your eggs is being thoughtful about the chemicals that you are exposed to on a daily basis. Some of the chemicals cause “oxidative stress”, which negatively impacts the DNA in your eggs. We, of course, encourage patients to stop smoking, stop recreational drug usage, and avoid alcohol. But chemicals in common household products also have the potential to disrupt your hormones and cause oxidative stress. One of these endocrine disruptors is plastic in the kitchen (water bottles, plastic Tupperware, plastic utensils, etc.), which can leach into the food, and be absorbed into the body – and did you know that cans are often lined with plastic? Another culprit is a group of chemicals called phthalates. Phthalates are commonly found in scented products (sprays, air freshener, soaps, personal hygiene products, etc.), cosmetics, and packaging. Whenever possible, choose “phthalate-free” options.

2. Eat lots of antioxidants

The good news is that antioxidant-rich foods (and supplements) can help undo the oxidative stress caused by exposures. So pile plenty of antioxidants onto your plate! Foods high in antioxidants include berries, beans, kale, broccoli, artichokes, pecans, pumpkin seeds, tomatoes, carrots, squash, and… dark chocolate! Yum! And many of the recommended supplements for egg quality (CoQ10, L-carnitine, vit C, vit E, etc.) support through their antioxidant properties.

3. Nourish your blood

From a Chinese medicine perspective, improving egg quality is primarily about nourishing blood. We mostly do this through diet and herbs, although we also encourage patients to avoid burning up their blood through exhausting activities such as endless rumination, overwork, and lack of sleep. Our go-to blood nourishing foods include beets, dark leafy greens, black sesame, shiitake mushrooms, barley, oats, mussels, oysters, and (sparingly) red meat. A great blood nourishing action to take daily is to toss a handful of goji berries into your daily tea – yum!

4. Decrease stress and improve blood flow

We realize how unhelpful it can be to tell someone on a fertility journey to decrease their stress level – of course you’re stressed! But having a daily practice to help manage that stress can curb increased cortisol and prolactin levels, which can interfere with egg development and decrease circulation to your ovaries. Whether you choose to manage stress and boost your blood flow with mindful breath, yoga, meditation, acupuncture, or walking (or, better yet, some combination!), these efforts will help ensure your ovaries get the resources they need to grow healthy eggs.

5. Good sleep makes for good fertility

Having a solid night’s sleep can help to regulate fertility hormones and keep egg development on track. A big contributor to insomnia these days is the blue light emitted from our screens. So, if you are someone that struggles with sleep, make sure you give yourself a couple of hours off your devices before bed (and come in for acupuncture!). Blue light can also interfere with melatonin levels, which have been shown to be a key influencer of egg quality. This is why melatonin is often used as a supplement for fertility.
